I ask because I noticed the pigtails are Revered Polarity but the antennas are not. Being a newbie here, would it be safe to assume you MUST use the same polarity antennas as pigtails?

Polarity does not denote electrical polarity in this case, it is the gender of the connector.

Not only that, but the antennas you linked to are TNC connectors, which will never mate with an SMA connection, unless you add another adapter.

Thank you for clarifying this for me. I take it then if I were to use these antennas and these cables it would work? Of course the antennas are going to be really tall. Would it really make a noticeable improvement?

Sorry about all the newbie questions.
Thank you,
Ben

Those should work well, but I will warn you:
5 dBi antennas atop this router look good.
7 dBi antennas atop this router double it's height.
9 dBi antennas atop this router would probably look slightly "mad scientist" Laughing

Here's what my 834Bv2 using 7 dBi antennas looks like. It's currently the only wireless-G device in my home, and serves as my internet gateway to DSL service.

How about 12dBi's? ;-)

I didn't want to go any bigger than a 7dBi, but was able to find the 12s for much cheaper. Just arrived from HK today... and I'm starting to have serious concerns about them toppling the whole damn router.

Assuming it doesn't--and assuming I don't destroy the housing with my very below-average dremel skills--I'll post a pic of the finished monstrosity in all its ridiculous glory...

Exclamation Question Exclamation 12 dBi Exclamation Question Exclamation
Okay, I'll admit it, yours will be bigger than mine. Laughing

You could always lay the router down horizontally on its side and rotate the antennas at 90 degrees in a fan pattern. You can also mount the SMA sockets in one of the removable side panels instead of atop the router frame. Once the flimsy plastic base (tabs break quickly) is detached, placing the router horizontally is much easier. I don't think a Dremel tool is absolutely necessary, a 1/4-inch drill bit is all I used to install the SMA pigtails.

Good luck and be certain to share pictures when you get it completed!! Very Happy

I've waited as long as I could to post, please forgive my level of newbness. I've tried flushing all this out on my own the past week but I'm not having too much luck.

Is there anywhere in the U.S. I can order parts from.
I understand I need the specific cable and the SMA antennas but I'm trouble finding them locally. Is it okay to order from outside the U.S.?

What special tools will I need to open the router?
I assume I'll need a soldering iron for the connectors inside.

So, does anyone have a site I can order 7dbi antennas from (and cables)?

Thank you!

Not unless you want to pay a lot more. ;)

Sure, thousands of people do it every day.

A small jeweler's screwdriver to unscrew the torx screws and pry the sides off.

Nope, no soldering required at all. :D

rfsupplier.com is a Chinese dealer, but I don't believe they have any 7 dBi antennas available right now.

Keith , they are about 5.75 inch. The last one just makes it. I used the vendor you posted. It was a good experiment, IMO the external do much better than the internal antennas. Thanks again for the info!

I got a hold of some 4" pigtails & wasn't in the mood to order longer ones from Hong Kong and wait another week, so I just made due with what I had.

One of the pigtails just barely made it, the other two were just fine. Overall I'm happy with the result & this antenna placement is more optimal with where I have my router setup.

I'm using 3 10dbi antennas I got off of eBay for $3.29 each. 4" pigtails I got for $0.99 each on eBay as well.

Agreed - VERY nice. I like the way you mounted the RP-SMA connectors across the back and sides.
