I tried installing the normal micro image on the WRT54G I was working with yesterday, and got the "upgrade failed" message. (Is there some problem with firmware uploads using Firefox on Linux?)
So, I backed out to the Linksys firmware to get to a known good state, then installed the v81 image normally, using IE7. Everything went fine. I have since installed it on a second WRT54Gv8.1 and then installed the normal micro image as well. Both seem to be doing well.
The only weirdness is that initaially the Cisco button/leds on the front panel were on/yellow. However, after a powercycle the leds are no longer on. No idea what that means, but it does not seem to be a problem.

When you are at the command prompt, are you located inside the folder where you have the firmware?
Ok so a cant get them damn thing to work. using the dd-wrt.v24-9330_micro_wrt54gv81.bin on my desktop can you give me the complete line of cmd promt? i am fed up with trying
Ok so im really new at this stuff. Im actually a natural resources major and im getting into alot of GIS. So im using that tftp prog and i know the server is 192.168.1.1 but i tried admin and [blank] for the password. it says that its unable to get a response from the server. i have a good ping. what do you guys think im doing wrong now?
Edit: Hey, wait, I just realized that you are asking for something else. I think you are missing the tftp window to write the firmware on the router. You don't need any password through tftp after vxworkskiller has been installed.
Cycle the router (unplug and plug power chord) and almost inmediately after plugging in power, try then to tftp the firmware.
Don't forget to set manually the static TCP/IP settings on your machine, at this moment the router is not able to give you an IP. Your IP should be 192.168.1.100, Mask 255.255.255.0, Gateway and DNS 192.168.1.1
so the device has been de-bricked and ddwrt worked last night. but i cant log on to the router now. I tried root and admin and many other typical username/password combos but nothing seems to work. im running dd-wrt mini on a wrt54g v8.2
