I am new to this, but am using Kong's r30015M from June 2016, which has worked bulletproof for me. I have also read that no changelogs are posted, and I do accept that. Just wondering, how do you guys decide whether or not to upgrade, especially when all is working well?

Some folks are like you and just want a solid router firmware for your situation. Staying with what you have that works is fine as long as there are no security holes that later builds fix. Rare with DD-WRT builds.
Some of us just like to play. See what the latest firmware offers and also provide testing for Kong and Brainslayer. I tend to install latest and see if it performs better or worse for me. Have had it go both ways. I also like to load Openwrt and see how that firmware is doing. Switching like that from DD-WRT to Openwrt is why I retain the Linksys partition. Some folks do not worry about that.
Hope this helps you understand why some do and some, like you, do not change firmware.

I just didnt want to load the wrong version. does it work for both then the v1 and v2?
Sorry for the newb question
Are you asking if you have a v1 or v2? If so look in the top with a light. Facing the router on the right top look inside. If you see a fan it is a v1. No fan it is a v2. Fan is not very big so you have to look close.
Link to how to tell via the labeling and serial number

Am assuming you do not have the packaging as you can tell from that.

Thanks for the help.
I quickly read the file names and thought the 1900ACV2 was a different model and not v2 of the 1900AC. silly mistake I am embarrassed.
wrt1900ac v1
upgraded from previous build, repeated issues with 5ghz dropping or connecting, reverted back and problem immediately went away.
It only happen to me when I am at the far end where the 5Ghz signal is weak but that was expected.
when I check the signal using WifiInfoView, it indicates that it is constantly cycling back and forth between n and ac even though I have it set on ac only.
my phone doesn't seem to have the same connection issues on the 5ghz with this build, but my new dell laptops don't like it at all. many of the channels they simply wont connect. If I go to the bottom end of the channels, it stays connected but still has the cycling pattern
edit: if I put it on "N only" it no longer cycles (and the connection issues seem to be gone**).
(**will verify that when I get more time)
and when I said previous build, I should clarify, I meant a much older build, not the one prior to this.

Sounds to me like you are experiencing channel hopping in the 5GHz band. This only affects DFS channels (ie. not the lowest numbered set) and is (or certainly was) prevalent in Kong builds. This was my primary reason for switching back to BS builds which do not do this.
I tried this once and ended up soft bricking my router. Suggest, therefore, that you should reset settings.
However, before doing this, try selecting a non-DFS channel and then reboot your end devices. If this fixes the issue, then moving to BS may make sense if you really need an upper (DFS) channel for 5GHz. If, instead, the issue persists, then moving to BS is unlikely to fix it.
